What is in Vinyl Records
Most records here were pressed between the 1950s and the 1990s, with some modern box sets and reissues. The focus is rock and pop: original UK pressings by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and the Velvet Underground, Japanese pressings and promotional singles, Italian and Danish beat and psychedelic records, and jazz. There are also picture discs, test pressings, coloured vinyl box sets and 78 rpm shellac records.
Grading
Records are graded twice, with a media condition for the disc and a sleeve condition for the cover, using the Goldmine scale.
- M or M&S: mint, or mint and still sealed.
- NM: near mint, with no visible faults.
- EX: excellent, with very light signs of handling.
- VG+: very good plus, with light marks that do little to affect play.
Identifying a pressing
First pressings are identified by the label design, the matrix numbers etched in the run-out groove, the sleeve printing and tax codes. Listings quote these details where they matter, for example the -2/-1 matrix on a first UK pressing of Abbey Road. Japanese pressings are valued for quiet vinyl and often come with an obi strip and insert; check both are mentioned if they matter to you. Promo copies carry a white or special label and are usually scarcer than the standard issue.

Frequently asked questions
What do VG+, EX and NM mean for records?
They are condition grades from the Goldmine scale. NM (near mint) shows no visible wear. EX (excellent) has very slight marks. VG+ (very good plus) shows light scuffs or wear that do not seriously affect playback. Discs and sleeves are graded separately, so a record may be NM for the disc and VG+ for the cover.
How do I recognise a first pressing of a record?
Check the label design and colours, the matrix number etched into the run-out groove near the label, the printer and tax codes on the sleeve, and any inserts. Discography websites list these details for each pressing. A first pressing usually has the lowest matrix suffix and the label variant used at the time of release.
What is an obi on a Japanese record?
An obi is the paper strip wrapped around the left side of a Japanese LP sleeve, printed in Japanese with the title and often the original price. It was easily thrown away, so Japanese pressings that still have the obi are more sought after and usually priced higher than copies without one.
